Psychodynamic Psychotherapist

British Psychoanalytic Council Reg. 23811

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a type of psychoanalytic therapy.

It is usually open ended and long term. Using this approach I will aim to help you feel better and think more clearly by helping you to develop a deeper understanding of yourself including why you are having the particular difficulties you are having.

This deeper understanding will be gained through exploring whatever is on your mind during each session. This will include making sense of unconscious thoughts such as dreams, as well as exploring and challenging patterns of relating that are repeated during the therapy.

About

I am a psychodynamic psychotherapist.

I trained at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust. I have worked therapeutically with people who have psychological and emotional difficulties for over fifteen years in a number of inpatient and community based NHS mental health services, mainly within South London and Maudsley NHS Trust. I am experienced in working with adults and older adults andam particularly skilled in helping people with early trauma and disrupted early attachments, relationship difficulties, mood and anxiety problems and issues around loss.

Since 2012 I have managed and clinically supervised NHS mental health clinicians from a range of professional backgrounds including psychological therapists, allied health professionals and mental health nurses who work in secondary care mental health services.

As well as my private work I continue to work for the NHS and am currently based in Bath, South West England.

All of my clinical work is supervised and I have undergone extensive personal psychoanalysis as required by my training.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

In psychodynamic psychotherapy we work out the unconscious meaning of why we feel, think and do what we do.

Symptoms such as anxiety, panic, persistent problems with anger or depression, unexplained physical symptoms or repetitive problems in relationships often signal that painful issues or anxieties from the past have not yet been worked through.

In psychodynamic psychotherapy we will spend time working out what these issues and anxieties are, and work through them together in a safe space. We will get a better understanding of why you are having the particular difficulties you are in the context of life experiences that are unique to you. I will focus on helping you develop a fuller contact with the different aspects of yourself and challenge the parts of yourself that hold you back.

Psychotherapy

I offer open ended psychotherapy, with sessions once or twice a week. I usually work with people long term, however I am able to offer short term focussed work if preferred. In our initial few meetings we will discuss the issues that have made you seek therapy and explore whether this kind of therapy is likely to be helpful for you, and if the way I work feels right for you.

Supervision

I offer clinical supervision for individual professional and unqualified clinicians employed by private and third sector organisations. This might be ongoing and open ended, or you might prefer to book a set number of sessions to think through a particularly challenging piece of work, depending on your circumstances.
